Do you want to buy essential oils
with confidence?
All essential oils are not the same!! There is a wide range of
qualities of oils on the market. With Inner Scents, you can feel
confident that you are buying the quality oils you want, for the benefits
you expect, at a price you can afford.

Over 90% of the essential
oils produced are created for the Food and Perfume industry.
These
industries require a consistent product each time they purchase. For
example, a leading manufacturer of a Lavender Hand Lotion, will buy
thousands of barrels of Lavender each year to scent their lotion. The
customer expects this product to always smell the same. Each season
though, you might have more rain, less sun, or they have bought their
Lavender from a different regional area. Nature, will not supply us
with exactly the same product, it varies according to growing conditions.
So the distiller of the Lavender may "extend" the Lavender by adding a
little more linalool, (one of the chemical groups found in lavender), or
adjusting the amount of linalyl acetate to create a consistent product.
This is fine for the cosmetic and perfume industry, but not for the art and
science of Aromatherapy.
For many other purposes, much
of the oils on the market are diluted, extended or adulterated in some way.
This is often the case with precious oils such as Rose otto, or the
Chamomiles.
A finer quality of oil is
expected in Aromatherapy today. We require the oils to be grown
without pesticides, picked at exactly the right moment to capture the
aromatics in their fullness. We require the distillation process to
handled with expertise, knowing just the right amount of time,
temperature and pressure to assure the best quality oil.
How to determine quality??
Comparing and purchasing oils from a variety of suppliers can be an
overwhelming experience. It's very difficult to do an apple to apple
comparison. Not every supplier carries the same products. There
are many varieties of Lavender, Eucalyptus or Basil. You have to use
the Latin name, not the common name for starters.
Terms commonly applied
essential oils will vary depending on the supplier, distiller, and the
country. For example, the word genuine, to a
manufacturer or distiller means that the plant exudes the material when cut,
such as in the case of myrrh and benzoin. It does not mean authentic or
real. Natural, often describes a product of first
distillation. Natural does not always mean - not artificial or not
synthetic. Pure, should mean an unadulterated product.
What you should know about
the oils you buy. The label should contain the following information.
-
the Latin name
-
the country of origin
-
the method of production
(distillation method, cold pressed or extracted, CO2 extraction, solvent
extraction)
-
the specific chemo type
You should also be able to
request a copy of the GC test. This test, Gas Chromatography is a
technique that separates the components of an essential oil according to the
differences in molecular weight and solubility. It is like having a
fingerprint of the oil. The test will show you the chemical
constituents ranges. This test can not detect specific synthetic
diluents and specific diluents of natural origin. But it will tell you
if there are traces of solvents or mineral oils, if the oil has been
rectified, had terpenes removed or if 2 or more oils with similar chemical
composition have been mixed together. The above information is from The
Australasian Herbal College.
